History

Unearthed from the bountiful mines of South Africa in 1877, this extraordinary gem made its way into the possession of the renowned New York jeweller, Charles Tiffany. Recognising the gem's exceptional quality, Tiffany entrusted his skilled gemologist, George Frederick Kunz, with the meticulous examination and assessment of the precious discovery. After a comprehensive evaluation, the gem, originally weighing an impressive 287 carats (equivalent to 57.5 grams), underwent a precise cutting process in the artistic city of Paris. The stone was expertly crafted by Parisian cutters, enhancing its brilliance and charm in its current form.

The gem then passed into the talented hands of esteemed jeweller Jean Schlumberger, who skillfully incorporated it into a stunning design. The collaborative efforts of these visionary artisans resulted in the creation of a masterpiece that beautifully showcased the gem's exceptional beauty and brilliance, set in a manner that complemented its unique characteristics. This fusion of artistry, skill, and passion culminated in the production of a timeless piece that continues to enchant and inspire admirers worldwide with its unmatched elegance and allure.

In 1879, the Tiffany branch in Paris acquired the Tiffany Diamond, originally weighing 287.42 carats in its rough state. It stood as the largest yellow diamond discovered at that time. The task of overseeing the cutting of this gem fell to George Frederick Kunz (1856–1932), a twenty-three-year-old gemologist who had recently joined the company.

Kunz deviated from the conventional square antique brilliant cut by increasing the total number of facets to ninety, resulting in a cut that reflects a significant amount of light to the observer. Diamonds of similar size also exhibit remarkable brilliance.

The Tiffany Yellow Diamond, larger than the renowned Hope Diamond, was loaned to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. from April 18, 2007, to September 23, 2007. During this period, Jeffrey E. Post, the museum's gem curator, declared it the most significant diamond on display in the United States.
